Best Eames Chair – An everyday object becomes a cult object
The Eames chair, designed by one of the most important designer couples of the 20th century, has the cult status to this day. This is certainly not only due to its pleasing design in many different combinations, colors, and designs, but especially due to the high level of seating comfort and the fact that it can be combined excellently with all kinds of other furniture and furnishings.
It was a long and long road to the development of the chair, which was not entirely without setbacks.
How did the famous Eames PlasticChair come about?
For many years, the designer couple had the basic idea of seating furniture that is organically and ergonomically made from one piece. First, they experimented with materials such as plywood and aluminum sheet and shaped the materials in a complex and three-dimensional manner.
However, they were only moderately successful and were only able to achieve satisfactory results when they discovered fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin for themselves.
The resulting Eames PlasticChair achieved cult status and is still widely used today, as the designers recognized the advantages of the material very quickly and knew how to use them consistently for their vision.
Where can the chair be used?
Until the chair was developed, the material was completely unknown to the furniture industry. When it was ready for series production, there was not only a large selection of colors but also a large number of different frames and designs that made the chair usable for many different purposes. As early as 1950, the two of them presented a whole range of different frames for different seating positions and uses.
Today there is a large number of different frames in countless possible combinations so that the chair can be used equally in public buildings, as an office chair, dining room chair, or also for meeting rooms, in restaurants, in canteens, or on the terrace and in the garden.
Lesser-known replica and replica offers are not advisable, however, as very cheap materials paired with poor workmanship are often used, which have a negative effect on the durability and possibly also seating comfort. Therefore, if you want to buy a replica, you should attach great importance to high-quality workmanship and construction. Beware of vendors who advertise original goods at half price. As a rule, these are cheap replicas.
Of course, there are also a number of alternative models that are based on the original design by Charles Eames, but the bottom line is quite different. The difference here is often in the details and it is certainly largely a matter of taste. But hardly any other model comes close to a real Eames chair in terms of design, seating comfort, and above all style so that it has rightly become a real cult object.
