Display types: LED is the current standard, OLED the future

LCD, LED, OLED – you have probably stumbled across these terms in your research on flat-screen TVs. It’s about the technology of the display.

When you buy a TV, you have a choice between LCD, LED and OLED TVs.

LCD TV: The LCD TV has an LCD with fluorescent tubes for backlighting. This consumes a relatively large amount of electricity and the black levels are poor.

LED TV: The LED TV also has LCD, but uses energy-saving light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for the backlight.

Especially with a flat arrangement, individual LEDs can be dimmed depending on the situation, so that very good black levels are achieved.

LED TVs are currently the standard for flat-screen TVs

OLED TV: In contrast to an LCD TV, the display of an OLED TV does not consist of liquid crystals, but of organic semiconductors that light up by them.

This means that no additional backlight is required. OLED displays impress with higher contrast, better black levels and a wider viewing angle. Disadvantages are the higher price and the shorter lifespan compared to an LED television.

When you buy a 24 inch TV, there are a few things to consider. We introduce you to the most important aspects so that you can find the best television with a 24-inch screen for your requirements.

Resolution: Not every 24-inch TV can handle Full HD

The different HD resolutions in size comparison – relevant in our context are only Full HD and HD (Ready). There are no 4K televisions with 24 inches.

The maximum possible picture quality for a television with a 24-inch screen is determined by the resolution.

24-inch TVs fall into two different categories: Full HD TVs and HD Ready TVs.

HD Ready: TVs with this technology have a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels and can play HD content in 720p format.

This technology delivers a significantly better picture quality than the classic DVDs.

Full HD: Full HD televisions have a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and thus have more than twice as many pixels as HD-Ready TVs.

Almost all digital television programs are broadcast today in the Full HD standard 1080p.

Note: The larger formats QHD and 4K-UHD are irrelevant for small 24 inch TVs. Due to the small display size, a difference would hardly be visible anyway.

4K televisions usually have a screen size of at least 40 inches. Because of its smaller size, a Full HD picture on a 24-inch TV is even sharper than a 4K picture on a 50-inch TV.

Connection options: Expand your selection with HDMI & USB

Via HDMI you can connect a game console like the Xbox One or play station to the TV.

But with modern 24-inch TV, you can do more than just watch TV. Most 24-inch televisions come with at least one USB and HDMI socket to be able to connect storage media and peripheral devices.

You can access your entire media library via the USB port. You can connect a USB stick or an external hard drive to listen to music, show vacation photos or watch films.

In the field of electronics, HDMI has established itself as the standard format for the transmission of audio and video data. Therefore, you can connect a whole range of different devices to your television with an HDMI cable – for example, the following:

  • DVD players and Blu-Ray players
  • Hard disk recorders and Blu-ray recorders
  • AV receivers and home theatre systems
  • Game consoles and laptops
  • Streaming boxes

Smart TV: Netflix without a computer

If you choose a 24-inch TV with WiFi, you have even more options. With a so-called Smart TV, you can also access content from the Internet

So you can access the popular video-on-demand portals like Netflix or Amazon Prime without having to connect your computer to the TV.

You can also watch YouTube videos, surf the web or play music from streaming services like Spotify. There are also apps and games for smart TVs.

HbbTV

With HbbTV you can access additional information from the Internet at any time using the remote control.

Another exciting function that is only available on smart TVs is HbbTV. The acronym stands for “Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV” and refers to a technology that combines digital television with additional information from the Internet.

With HbbTV you can, for example, display the line-up for a cricket match or a film with customized subtitles. You also have access to a much more flexible electronic program guide via HbbTV.

Tip: You can also access the media libraries of the public broadcasters via HbbTV.

With a 12 V power adapter, you can also watch TV while camping

If you like camping, then you can watch a movie in the camper with a 12-volt television.

If you spend a lot of time with the motorhome on the road or at the campsite, then having 12 V adaptor capable TV is surely a good idea. Because, even at the most beautiful ambience you may need some TV entertainment at some point.

Some manufacturers, therefore, sell 12-volt televisions with a 24-inch screen that can be operated on the motor home’s battery. If you then combine the 12 V television with a small camping satellite system, you can watch TV anywhere.

Energy efficiency class: Today’s televisions are very economical

Like washing machines, televisions are a product category for which energy labelling is common practice. On these labels, the televisions are classified in an energy efficiency class in comparison with a reference product.

For televisions, the scale ranges from A ++ to E, but devices with a lower energy efficiency class than B are now extremely rare.

Due to its design, only LED televisions with larger screen sizes from 43 inches upwards achieve the best mark A ++.

Tip: Check for the annual power consumption, which is also indicated on the label. For televisions, this value is based on the usage of four hours a day. However, energy consumption in standby mode is not included.

An integrated DVD player is worthwhile for film fans

If you have a large collection of films, then go for a 24 inch TV with an integrated DVD player.

Some good televisions with a 24-inch screen also have a DVD player integrated. Perhaps you are asking yourself now: “Is DVD still up to date?” And the answer to this question is “yes and no”.

Because, even if an almost unmanageable amount of films and series are available through video-on-demand. There are still some advantages of physical media such as DVDs – especially if you are a film lover.

The advantages and disadvantages of DVDs compared to video-on-demand:

  • DVDs are yours forever, the offer on Netflix is constantly changing
  • Older films and obscure independent productions are often only available on DVD
  • You don’t need the internet to watch a movie from DVD
  • DVDs are more expensive
  • You need space to keep the DVD collection
